Talk of the Town
State of the Instructional Systems Program @ FSU

At the end of Spring Semester 2001, we said a fond farewell to Dr. Walter Dick. Dr. Dick has been a leading figure in the Instructional Systems field and a loved professor in the IS@FSU Program. His retirement is the first of several to come. Within the next two years, three more senior faculty members will be retiring; Dr. Robert Morgan, Dr. Roger Kaufman, and Dr. Robert Branson.

Our current faculty have been carrying a heavy load for many semesters, balancing teaching, research, service, advising, and many other duties. Currently, the IS Program at FSU is in the middle of two position searches; one for a Full or Associate Professor Position and one for an Assistant Professor Position. Committees will begin meeting to make decisions on possible candidates in mid-November.

Take this opportunity to make your voice heard. What is your opinion?

  • What qualifications should we be looking for?
  • Where are we headed as a program?

  Performance Technology Or Instructional Systems?
The roots of our field (IS) are in training...ie: designing instruction. Yet, performance demands that we look at alternative solutions to performance issues. Is this too broad of a demand for one program? Should the Instructional Systems Program at Florida State be split into two separate programs: one for Instructional Systems and one for Performance Technology?

Coming to the US to Study Instructional Systems?
Are you thinking about coming to the United States to study Instruction Systems? What questions do you have? Or are/have you been an international student in the US studying Instructional Systems? What advise would you give to others coming from your home country?

Mentor Connection
  Co-Mentoring

In French (1749) and English (1750) "mentor", going back through Latin to a Greek name, became a common noun meaning “wise counselor”. Mentor is an appropriate name for such a person because it probably meant “adviser” in Greek and comes from the Indo-European root 'men', meaning “to think.”

Are you in need of some "wise counsel"? Care to share your "advise" on various questions and ideas?

Come on in....

  Where in the Workplace?
As the field of Instructional Systems evolves, the focus is moving (or at least we hear it is) from a training focus to a performance improvement focus. How has this changed what is required in the field? What should a graduate program look like today to meet these requirements?

  Bridging the Gap
In an environment that includes a fast-track Master's Program where students are in for two semesters, out for an internship and in for one final semester versus a doctoral program that lead students through 2-3 years of coursework plus dissertation work, how can we bridge the "communication and community" gap that develops and divides our Masters students from our Doctoral students?
