National Flagship Language Program

NFLP Fellowships are two-year awards that provide support for all academic
expenses directly associated with participation in the National Flagship
Language Program, including tuition, a stipend for living expenses,
and support for travel costs and health insurance coverage.
The fellowship has two components: one domestic and one overseas. The
first year of the fellowship is intended to support study in an intensive
domestic program at the flagship institution. The second year supports
study in an immersion program overseas. It is expected that all Fellows
who participate in the domestic component will continue with the overseas
component. In exceptional cases, flagship institutions may determine
that an applicant with advanced language skills should bypass the domestic
year and participate in only the overseas component. In these cases,
the NFLP Fellowship will provide funding for one year of study.
NFLP Fellowship award recipients are expected to devote full-time effort
to the Flagship Language Program. NFLP Fellows may not pursue requirements
of other degree programs while receiving NFLP Fellowship support, nor
may NFLP Fellowships be combined with other sources of funding that
would require Fellows to devote less than full-time effort to the Flagship
Language Program.

Qatar Scholarship Program
The Qatar Scholarship Program offers dedicated Arabic language students
from the United States the opportunity to master their skills in an
intensive Arabic language program at the University of Qatar in Doha.
This program is open to graduate students or those recently obtaining
a Bachelors or Masters degree. The scholarship includes round-trip economy
air tickets to Doha, Qatar, tuition, university housing, books and a
modest monthly stipend of QR 500 (approximately $130 US). Please note,
however, that the monthly stipend is modest and students should plan
on supplementing this with their own savings. Scholarship students are
also required to tutor QU students in English for four hours per week.
The program is designed for those who have already developed their Arabic
at the Intermediate and Advanced levels (minimum of 2 years of study
is needed to apply). Students passing a proficiency exam at QU also
will o have the opportunity to audit regular undergraduate courses taught
in Arabic in an array of subjects, but the University of Qatar provides
no academic credit for this program. The Department of Arabic has a
number of specialized instructors who have extensive experience teaching
Arabic to non-native speakers. Modern Standard Arabic (fusha) and formal
spoken Arabic (lughat al muthaqafeen) are offered, however, at the present,
Qatari colloquial Arabic is not offered. The curriculum includes: reading,
composition, phonetics, Arabic literature in the modern period, the
Quran, Hadith, schools of poetry, rhetoric, Arabic grammar, semantics,
and methods of teaching Arabic for non-native speakers. For more information
about the program at QU, click here.

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships Program
The primary purpose of the Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
Program is to further international understanding and friendly relations
among people of different countries. Ambassadorial Scholarships for
2000-2001 are awarded for study or training beginning after 1 July 2000
in another country where Rotary clubs are located. During the study
period, scholars are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of good
will to the people of the host country through both informal and formal
appearances before Rotary clubs and districts, school and civic organizations,
and other forums. After study has been completed, scholars share their
experiences with the people of their home countries and with the local
Rotarians who sponsored their scholarship.
Types of scholarships
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship provides funding
for one academic year of study(usually nine months) at a study institution
assigned by The Rotary Foundation Trustees. Because the scholarship
is primarily ambassadorial and limited to one academic year, recipients
may not be able to earn degrees or diplomas during the study period.
This award is intended to help cover round-trip transportation, one
month of intensive language training (if assigned by the Foundation),
required academic fees for a normal course load, reasonable room and
board expenses, and some educational supplies. The Foundation will not
pay additional costs resulting from personal living preferences. Generally,
awards will range between US$ 11,000 and US$ 23,000 depending upon actual
costs at the assigned study institution, with no award to exceed US$
23,000 or its equivalent. Applicants who request and are assigned to
an institution where costs exceed US$ 23,000 must pay all additional
costs.
Harry Truman Scholarship
Harry Truman Scholarship seeks future "change agents" who
aspire to leadership positions in federal, state, or local governments
or in the not-for-profit and education sectors where they can influence
public policies and programs. Candidates should have extensive community
service, have outstanding leadership potential, and be committed to
a career in government or in public policy. Approximately 75 awards
of $30,000 are made annually, $3,000 for the senior year and $27,000
for graduate studies.
Qualifications: be a full-time junior at a four-year institution, be
committed to a career in public service, be in the top 25% of his/her
class, and be a U. S. citizen or national. University nomination is
required.
